EDITOR'S COMMENT

28•06•21 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz newsletter.

• The news that RV rental marketplace Outdoorsy has raised $120 million in equity and debt financing signals a significant milestone in the investment in the motor home and wider outdoor travel space, and it only looks set to accelerate.

Having previously raised $75.1 million in funding, Outdoorsy follows on from the likes of RVshare, RVezy and Cabana that have secured sizeable investment during the pandemic, highlighting the growing interest in the segment, the pent-up demand for travel, and the willingness to consider alternative accommodation types as we emerge from lockdowns.

A couple of weeks ago, we hosted a 'Great outdoors' RockSTRz webinar exploring the growing professionalisation of this particular segment, and the fact that Outdoorsy is going to use the funding to grow its insurtech business Roamly is further evidence of this.

Roamly is designed to provide “innovative digital insurance products for travellers and recreational vehicle owners”, insuring RVs and campers as 'rent ready'. The service will  eliminate commercial exclusion clauses that traditionally inhibit online listing activity, and as the RV / motor home sector continues to gain traction, it will need to professionalise at a similar rate to meet the surge in demand.

• Meanwhile, our RockSTRz webinar series returns on Tuesday 29 June [4pm BST] with an unmissable session on 'The challenges and opportunities facing the short-term rental industry' [sponsored by Flywire] - register for the no-cost webinar HERE.

The webinar will address a range of topics, ranging from the current regulatory outlook in markets around the world, to the importance of advocacy for fair regulations, maintaining a balance between attracting domestic travellers and combatting over-tourism, growth avenues in the space, and how Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky’s vision for ‘travel redistribution’ will play out.

Joining me for the webinar will be:
• Fiona Campbell, Chief Executive, Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers [ASSC]

• Matt Curtis, Founder, Smart City Policy Group

• Carlos Pérez-Lanzac de Lorca, President, VR Andalusian Association [AVVA]

• Pam Knudsen, Senior Director, Compliance Services, Avalara MyLodgeTax
