EDITOR'S COMMENT

• The labour shortage has been largely felt across hospitality - it was even discussed today at IHM's business breakfast event in partnership with AHV Associates. Held at The Mandrake hotel in London, we brought together 30 hospitality and real estate professionals to map the industry's future.

A point was raised as to what will likely happen in the UK when the furlough scheme ends in September, and how we'e going to attract talent into the labour market. Despite estimations that the scheme will cost £66 billion, one solution lies with Tronc - hospitality's tipping system. It was highlighted that the government currently does not accept Tronc payments as part of salaries, thereby preventing some international workers from obtaining visas. The government may reassess this matter if hospitality's full reopening and recovery is stalled as a result of the skills gap.

• On the topic of attracting talent, Inspired Community Group's Motivator Programme is a fresh take on the challenge. The initiative involves hospitality employees volunteering to educate young people through school partnerships. What strikes me as innovative is the reality of establishing a pool of potential recruits during the programme. I've heard it mentioned that there's an increasing lack of schools which offer hospitality courses, and the Motivator project bridges the progression between education and work.

Red Carnation Hotel Group is the first brand to partner with Inspired Community Group on the initiative, and I look forward to seeing who else will sign up.
