EDITOR'S COMMENT

• There's definitely a feeling in the air that the industry is gearing up for the return of mass travel, and many of those who have managed to negotiate the last 15 months relatively unscathed - and it is relative - are making their next moves.
In the last couple of days alone we've seen news of hotels refinancing to enter the next phase on a sound footing, we've seen several properties reopening after extensive renovations undertaken during the pandemic, and we've seen numerous acquisitions.
Self-contained accommodation has outperformed the rest of the hospitality sector for the last 16 months but as things normalise people are going to very quickly start looking for great service and for experiences that they can't get in a vacation rental villa or apartment - boutique and lifestyle hotels should be poised for a huge surge in interest in H2 of this year.
• The pandemic has been very tough on those working in hospitality at all levels, and the added pressure has made initiatives such as the Institute of Hospitality's Mentor Me program all there important.
The Institute has launched an online silent auction to raise funds for the scheme, which has put together more than 300 pairs of mentors and mentees since its launch three years ago.
There are some great lots up for auction, including money-can’t-buy dining experiences with top chefs Monica Galetti, Michel Roux Jr and Marcus Wareing, chefs tables and private dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants, a seven-day luxury escape to Barbados, hotel stays in a Malmaison or Hotel du Vin property, VIP cricket and golf packages, various rare memorabilia and more.
The auction is live until Sunday, 18 July 2021. To place a bid, click here.
