Exclusive feature: How will Airbnb's Olympic / Paralympic legacy be defined?

As Tokyo prepares to host the delayed 2020 Olympics, we dissect how global sponsor Airbnb's legacy from this year's Games will be defined in the years ahead - read more HERE.

EDITOR'S COMMENT

22•07•21 Welcome to the latest ShortTermRentalz newsletter.

• On the eve of the delayed 2020 Olympics, it promises to be a defining moment in history for host city Tokyo, the Olympic and Paralympic movement, and Airbnb, which is a worldwide partner for the Games for the next seven years.

The lead up to the Games has been beset by a number of problems and scandals, from corruption allegations and sponsor withdrawals at the last minute, to the absence of spectators from all events in the Japanese capital against a backdrop of soaring Covid-19 infections and mounting public opposition against the events.

Airbnb, which announced the partnership agreement back in 2019, has also been heavily affected in the build up to the event. With its host community unable to provide accommodation to guests and athlete entourages, Airbnb's reputation and credibility are also at risk through its association with these Games, as well as the ones succeeding them.

With that in mind, I have been analysing how Airbnb's legacy from the partnership may be assessed in the coming years, as well as the impact it will have on the Japanese short-term rental industry and whether it will be able to capitalise on the global exposure without fans.
