STRz podcast 24: HomeToGo's Rachel Tabellion on the future of the revenge travel phenomenon
HomeToGo's Rachel Tabellion joins the STRz podcast to speak about the company's Revenge Travel report with AirDNA and the winners and losers of the revenge travel phenomenon, while we hear the latest on the company's proposed SPAC merger.
EDITOR'S COMMENT
• It was already a well-established fact that the holiday park space is ripe for investment, given travellers' inclination to travel domestically without restrictions and the frenzy of M&A activity, so Away and Aria Resorts' merger to form a new £600 million staycation powerhouse bodes well for the revenge travel phenomenon.
The combined company will operate 20 resorts across the UK and aims to become the leading holiday park operator in the UK. Already this year, Away has been acquired by CVC Capital Partners, Bourne Leisure has been sold to Blackstone in a multi-million pound deal, and Center Parcs has secured an agreement for a new £400 million park in West Sussex.
The surge in pent-up demand resulting in domestic bookings is not just limited to the UK though, as HomeToGo's Rachel Tabellion explained in this week's STRz podcast. Right across Europe, travellers are holidaying in close-by destinations and customising their trips to make them as flexible, autonomous and stress-free as possible.
With booking patterns varying across different markets, it is almost impossible to discern who will benefit most from this revenge travel phenomenon, but the desire for high-quality accommodation is clear. While rural, coastal and mountain destinations continue to flourish, urban rentals are also showing signs of recovery, and property managers must be ready to capitalise on the opportunity to capture first-time guests and retain their loyalty in the future.
