EDITOR'S COMMENT
• The hive of investment activity in the market this week, combined with a resurgence in traveller confidence, paves the way for a bright future for a short-term rental industry that has gathered unprecedented momentum during the pandemic.
Alternative accommodation marketplace HomeToGo, and now hospitality chain OYO, are following in the much-publicised footsteps of Airbnb by going public, and lodging company Sonder and luxury travel subscription brand Inspirato are preparing to go down the same route through special purpose acquisition company [SPAC] mergers by the end of the year.
Industry experts have been observing the blurring lines between the short-term rental and extended stay segments for some time, too, backed up by Brian Chesky's assertions that long-term stays [28+ nights] were Airbnb's fastest-growing trip-length category in Q2 and that the flexibility created by remote work is driving the shift for more varied length bookings.
Furnished apartment rental startups Blueground and Ukio may be at different stages of their growth, but both have raised significant funding [$180m in Series C and $9m in seed rounds respectively] and both specialise in stays between one month and five months on average. With the support of notable backers such as Laurence Tosi [WestCap, ex Airbnb] and venture firm Breega, we can expect more companies like these to thrive as they provide more leeway for guests to travel longer, further and more often in the future.
