The future of industry consolidation in the
short-term rental ecosystem

Amiad Soto, co-founder and CEO of property management platform Guesty, discusses the who, where, when and what’s next for consolidation across the short-term rental ecosystem.

EDITOR'S COMMENT

• The implications of the EU’s consultation on short-term rental regulations are potentially huge. Europe has a well documented patchwork of disparate laws governing the sector, and these vary significantly from country to country, region to region and even city to city.

The fact that the EU is considering pan-European regulation is a clear indication that the current situation is fragmented and messy, but a one-size-fits-all approach is fraught with issues - for example, Edinburgh, where the issues of over-tourism and unaffordable housing for locals are high on the agenda, has much more in common with Barcelona or Venice than it does with nearby Falkirk or Dundee.

A blunt and far-reaching regulatory instrument is surely not the answer - I can envisage some basic rules being implemented Europe-wide, but local governments will be lobbying hard to retain decision making power over issues which directly affect their constituents.

• Don’t miss our next STRZ Rockstarz webinar, which is taking place on October 12 at 4pm BST. Editor Paul Stevens will be discussing the pros and cons of buying or renting furniture for STR units.

Joining him will be Lauren Maylor, creative director at Loft; Alex Stewart, managing director at House & Garden Furnishings UK; Pauline Wetzer, founder of FØERNI Furniture Rental; and Andria Santos, CEO and founder of Fülhaus.
