EDITOR'S COMMENT
• The long-running saga of rental regulations in Scotland is showing little signs of reaching a conclusion any time soon, with the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers
[ASSC] labelling the Scottish government's proposals for councils to enforce compulsory licences for short-term let properties as "onerous" and "ill-considered".
Tackling the growth of rentals in tourist areas such as Edinburgh is a hot topic again after the government published a report setting out plans which would empower individual authorities to enforce a raft of regulatory measures.
With MSPs due to debate the proposals in early 2022, it again highlights how some states and governments are taking a dim view of short-term rentals as a hospitality segment. A single set of pan-European rules is being considered by the European Commission
despite it supporting an expansion of competition and players in the sector, but the need to appease member states and respect EU law may hasten calls for more specific sector regulation.
