EDITOR'S COMMENT
• Ahead of a packed week of STRz content, the ever-shifting regulatory landscape continues to dominate the headlines, with short-term rental registration schemes moving a step closer in England and Ireland, while a deadline to introduce a similar system in Scotland has been delayed into the New Year.
The introduction of registration schemes will come as little surprise to advocacy organisations, following years of debate with governments and local authorities. In Ireland, the drafting of a short-term letting bill has been approved, with ministers seeking to create a “level playing field” for all accommodation providers by ensuring transparency and visibility across the sector. In England, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is aiming to help the government "better understand and monitor the impact of short-term lets on local communities".
While Airbnb, The Irish Self-Catering Federation and the UK Short-Term Accommodation Association have all welcomed the implementation of registration schemes, it is not a simple black and white case. The schemes would have to be simple for owners to register with, straightforward to administer and low cost to run, all while addressing underlying issues with planning requirements, otherwise they could risk wiping out a valuable source of revenue for tourism and eroding trust in a growing sector that is becoming more professional.
