EDITOR'S COMMENT
• AI is definitely the word on everyone's lips in the industry at the moment, and it was fascinating to hear Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky's reasoning for the company "pulling the plug" on being a ChatGPT launch partner at the end of last year.
Speaking on the publication of Airbnb's Q1 earnings report, Chesky said that the text-only AI was not sufficient for Airbnb to convey its listings offerings effectively, in particular for the way that the company has established new search categories over the last 12 months [notably the newly-announced 'Rooms' category]. Airbnb prides itself on its marketing, photography and website design when it comes to enticing repeat and first-time bookers, and the company will instead look to employ AI to provide a cheaper service and faster customer service.
The launch of ChatGPT and other forms of artificial intelligence is undoubtedly exciting and potentially transformational for the short-term rental industry. However, as I discussed on two panels last week [a STRz webinar and a session at Vitur Summit in Málaga], there is still much to learn about the use cases of AI, the opportunities for the future and the possible threats it poses, for example discrimination, cybersecurity / fraud and deepfakes, before we can unleash and leverage its true potential.
Plum Guide CEO Doron Meyassed also spoke with me in depth about his company's use of generative AI in terms of decision-based activity around property vetting and also the creation of effective listing descriptions that will most resonate with discerning luxury consumers.
