EDITOR'S COMMENT
• It was good fun talking to Charlie MacGregor - especially in the run up to The Social Hub's Glasgow opening, set to launch in April. As the UK debut for the group, we discussed what to expect from the upcoming property and how TSH is expanding its coworking space in future locations. "We're focussed on increasing our coworking revenue from around 11 per cent up to 20-25 per cent, that's our strategy," he said.
The Social Hub caters to a wide customer base, including leisure and business travellers, students (and their parents), as well as offering coliving and extended stay options. Shifting traveller demographics and values, particularly amongst corporates, is clearly having an impact on the direction of our industry. I've highlighted before that operators which have historically targeted the corporate traveller will need to pivot, yet the ambitious strategy TSH is pursuing provides confidence in the "work from anywhere" movement.
Maximising revenue per square foot is becoming essential for hoteliers, and serviced accommodation operators should look at value-add offerings (either on or off site) to better attract guests - especially if business travel bookings are less frequent but for longer periods.
