EDITOR'S COMMENT

• The finish line is almost in sight and we're coming up to the home straight - Wednesday 13 March [23:59 GMT] is the deadline this week to submit your no-cost entries for the 2024 Shortyz Awards, ahead of the awards ceremony next month.

Complete your no-cost submissions here in any of the 20 categories that are up for grabs, including our new Team of the Year category. Check out our article on 'How to create a standout Shortyz Awards entry' to ensure your company / individual shines out to the judges in the face of stiff competition when the judging period commences this month.

Tickets are now on sale for the in-person awards ceremony on Tuesday 23 April in London - don't miss out on the celebration of the year in the global short-term / vacation rental sector!

• In other headline news here in the UK, the 2024 Spring Budget has gone down like a lead balloon as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced that the government is scrapping tax relief for holiday lets, in order to improve the availability of long-term rentals.

The update follows the government's announcement last month that it would bring in fresh short-term let controls in England, thus preventing a "hollowing out" of communities.

It appears to once again be a draconian, short-term measure, particularly given the value of holiday lets to the UK tourism economy and the "tens of thousands" of jobs that could be lost across Britain's rural and coastal communities, according to Alistair Handyside of PASC UK. The segment is seemingly being scapegoated for wider issues around house building and "copy-cat-like" legislation is being imposed without due consideration.
